What is the f-number?

Basically, it's a dimensionless number describing the speed of a lens. The smaller the number, the faster the lens. It is the ratio of a lens's focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil. It is also called focal ratio, f-ratio, f-stop or relative aperture.

Beside is a diagram of decreasing apertures from 2.8 to 8 in one-stop increments. Each aperture has half the light gathering area of the previous one.

About me:

My name is Oliver Baumberger, I live in Switzerland, a country that offers various great photo opportunities with its mountains and the four seasons. Normally I prefer going outside to take pictures of landscapes. But there are a lot of different motives I'm interested in, such as airplanes, with which I originally learned how to operate a camera.
